What is EtherMail? The Decentralized Email of The Web3

EtherMail is a decentralized email system built on the Ethereum blockchain. It aims to provide a secure and private email service that is resistant to censorship and data breaches.

In the EtherMail system, users can send and receive email messages through a decentralized network of nodes. These nodes are run by volunteers who contribute their computing resources to the network. Each message is encrypted and stored on the Ethereum blockchain, making it difficult for anyone to intercept or read the contents of the message without the proper decryption key.

One of the main advantages of EtherMail is that it does not rely on any central authority or server to operate. This means that it is resistant to censorship and cannot be shut down by a single entity. Additionally, because the messages are stored on the blockchain, they are secure and cannot be deleted or altered without the proper cryptographic keys.

The project is based on the need to guarantee users direct, anonymous, and encrypted communication between peers (p2p). According to EtherMail, more than 320 billion emails are sent every day, but many are fraudulent or their content is of little importance to their recipients.

Therefore, the objective of this project is to allow each user to have full ownership, control, and sovereignty over their inbox. In this way, the risks of spam, phishing attacks, and other fraud are reduced.

Emails Between DApps

The crypto industry has brought with it great technologies that are revolutionizing society, the economy, and culture. In the case of email, blockchain technology has the potential to overcome the shortcomings of traditional services. These services have proved insufficient to meet the needs and demands that arise in the new generation of the Internet. The so-called Web3 promises a more open, free, decentralized, and secure Internet.

According to EtherMail, traditional email services use data transfer protocols that increase the risk of phishing among users. Likewise, the providers of these services maintain constant access to the content received in the mail in exchange for their free services. This makes it easy to collect data to feed their advertising machines, sending a large number of unsolicited messages to users’ email addresses.

On the other hand, the lack of decentralized email standards for the Web3 industry makes it difficult to send or receive emails between DApps. Currently, wallet addresses are not automatically alerted to any Web3 activity, EtherMail says. Therefore, the objective of this project will be to offer a solution to the new communication needs of the blockchain industry.

EtherMail will encourage fully encrypted and anonymous P2P communications. It will also incentivize users to read relevant project content that lands in their inboxes.

Direct Communication on NFT and Digital Assets

EtherMail will offer its users the possibility to receive information about their digital assets in their emails. According to the developers of the project, users will be able to get updated information about the tokens they own directly in their inboxes.

They explain that for end users this means fully anonymous P2P communication and being rewarded for reading relevant content in their inboxes. While Web3 companies will be able to send important content to the owners of their projects or assets directly and in real-time, thanks to blockchain. This is especially useful for both users and developers of NFT projects, video games, and metaverses.

$3 Million Led By Fabric Ventures

Last June, EtherMail raised $3 million in its first round of capital, which was led by the company Fabric Ventures. Other companies in the industry that support the development of this project are The Barcelona Blockchain Network, a network to promote the potential of the blockchain industry beyond the financial applications of cryptocurrencies; Greenfield One, a venture capital company focused on projects in the crypto world; and the blockchain ecosystems of Ethereum, Flow, and Celo.

On the other hand, EtherMail also has a strong team of professionals and expert advisors in investments, venture capital, blockchain technology, software development, and more. Kevonian and Heydenreich plan to launch the EtherMail encrypted communication service in the third quarter of this year.

Communication on Web3

In the crypto industry, there are also other projects that are already trying to adapt communication to Web3. Initiatives like pubDAO and Mirror.xyz want to return information sovereignty to their users. In the case of pubDAO, it is a project that seeks to redefine the publication, creation, and distribution of content through the blockchain. Mirror aims for authors to be able to fully control the content they create.

More Features of EtherMail

There are a few other key features of EtherMail that may be of interest:

  1. Decentralized: As mentioned, EtherMail relies on a decentralized network of nodes to operate, rather than a central server or authority. This makes it more resilient to censorship and attacks.
  2. Private: Messages sent through EtherMail are encrypted end-to-end, meaning that they can only be read by the sender and the intended recipient. This helps to protect the privacy of users.
  3. Open source: EtherMail is an open-source project, which means that anyone can contribute to its development and help to improve it. This also means that the code is transparent and can be audited by anyone.
  4. Built on Ethereum: EtherMail is built on the Ethereum blockchain, which is a decentralized, open-source platform for building and running applications. Ethereum is known for its security and reliability, which makes it a good choice for building a decentralized email system.

Overall, EtherMail has the potential to provide a secure and private alternative to traditional email services. It is still in development, so it may not yet be fully functional or widely available. However, it is an interesting project that is worth keeping an eye on.
